As part of the Healthy Harbor initiative, a plan to make Baltimore’s Inner Harbor swimmable and fishable by 2020, the Waterfront Partnership today launched a trash-intercepting water wheel.
The wheel is powered by water currents and solar panels (!). It sits at the mouth of the Jones Falls where it empties into the Northwest Branch of the Patapsco River. Trash is funneled by booms to a conveyor that takes it to a dumpster where it can be hauled off and processed.
This is an exciting and innovative solution for urban waters facing trash problems. It also makes an amazing design for a cake.
More on the wheel can be found in Baltimore Sun Reporter Tim Wheeler’s blog.
