Oaxaca, Mexico is home to El Árbol del Tule, the world’s largest tree by circumference, a natural wonder that’s nearly 2,000 years old with a trunk measuring over 140 feet in diameter. Located in Santa María del Tule, Oaxaca, this Montezuma cypress, referred to as El Tule, has been faithfully protected by the local community for generations.

A few of SavATree’s arborists and executives began 2024 with a trip to this remarkable location to learn about the centuries of meticulous care and attention that have contributed to the preservation of El Tule. The tree is tended to by the local church and community, receiving water, irrigation, and protection from harm. It serves as a poignant reminder that our treasured trees, while resilient, still require unwavering stewardship to prevail.

Compared to the lifespan of trees like El Tule, we as humans are only around for a short time. We are entrusted with protecting these living treasures for future generations, as trees outlive us and play a crucial role in our environment, providing shade, shelter, sustenance, and mitigating climate change through carbon sequestration. Think of how many tons of carbon have been captured by El Tule over the centuries it has existed!

Every individual is called to be an environmental steward. Whether it’s tending to the needs of majestic giants like El

Tule or nurturing the green spaces in our own properties and communities, every act of care contributes to the greater good of our environment.

SavATree’s mission, driven by a passion for tree care and science-based practices, emphasizes the importance of safeguarding landscapes for future generations to enjoy. As we reflect on the timeless beauty and resilience of El Tule, let us remember that each of us holds the power to make a positive impact on our environment. Let’s continue to cherish and care for our landscapes, ensuring that future generations can also marvel at the wonders of nature.

Sincerely,
