The 4 and 5 year old children had lots of fun participating in an Arbor Day Activity that taught them about what things were beneficial for trees. September 8, 2019 – Adding trees and shrubs to your landscape can add many benefits and value to your property. However, proper planting is crucial to the future success and health of your plants. This can be tricky at times since you do not want to plant too high or too deep. With trees, you want make sure a root flare is visible just above the ground surface. Remove any string, plastic, burlap, etc and never pile mulch against the trunk and base. Stakes for anchor and support can be helpful, but must be checked and removed within a year so they do not girdle into the trunk. For professional advice on proper tree planting, contact SavATree!
September 8, 2019 – Why is this tree oozing? In this scenario, a root from an oak tree was wounded from a lawn mower. The gooey substance seen is know as slime flux. Slime flux is generally caused by common surface-inhabiting bacteria or yeast fungi that invade wounds and live off the nutrients in the tree sap. It attracts several pollinators and beneficial insects acting as a watering hole. It is not deadly, but make sure you monitor your tree and minimize further stresses such as soil compaction. Also contact a SavATree Arborist so they can recommend proper pruning, fertility and health treatments.
