Defending Tipuana Tipu Trees Against the Tipu Psyllid

The Tipu psyllid (Platycorypha nigrivirga) has emerged as a destructive pest affecting the Tipuana tipu rosewood tree in Southern California. The tree, also known as “Pride of Bolivia,” is prized for its tolerance to drought and frost, vibrant yellow flowers, and moderate height.

Since its discovery in October 2008 in San Diego County, the Tipu psyllid has caused extensive damage. It feeds on young leaves and branches, leading to premature leaf drop and the growth of black sooty mold. With no natural predators in California, this tiny insect poses a significant threat to the health and value of Tipu tree plantings in Golden State landscapes.

Proactive tree treatments can help prevent the Tipu psyllid from establishing itself.

If an infestation does occur, early detection and management by a professional arborist can help minimize damage to the trees.
