Palm pruning

For many, the palm trees of Florida symbolize vacation, warm climates and fun. What visitors to our state don’t always see is the constant care required to keep our palms beautiful.

In sheer volume of palm trees, Florida is at the head of the pack. With 12 species native to our state, palms of every shape and size line our streets and fill our neighborhoods providing shade and a home for wildlife. With so many of these trees to admire, it’s easy to take them for granted but keeping palms healthy is a bigger job than you may suspect.

In addition to regular fertilization, proper pruning is an important step in keeping our palms healthy and looking great. According to the University of Florida, a properly fertilized and pruned palm will have approximately 270 degrees of green foliage. To achieve a nice, rounded canopy, a good rule of thumb is to never cut above 9 and 3 O’clock on the fronds. Overpruning or “hurricane pruning” can leave the palm vulnerable to insects and diseases and can also deprive newer growth of key nutrients found in older, browning fronds.

Florida homeowners and landscape professionals know all too well that fruit and coconuts from palm trees can be messy and downright dangerous. Removing the fruits or flowering stalks on an as-needed basis won’t damage the palm but can be risky business in higher trees.
