Drought’s cumulative impact on lawns

As we’ve recently come out of particularly dry summer and fall seasons, the effects of drought on susceptible landscapes may become more apparent in the coming months.

A common misconception is that once rainfall is present after a dry period, a quick grass green-up indicates that the problem is solved. Unfortunately, the long-term effects of that dry period may still be impacting landscapes below the surface.

Short-term effects of drought:

  • Yellowing and browning due to lack of moisture
  • Roots are unable to take up sufficient water and nutrients leaving trees, plants and lawns more susceptible to damage, disease, and pests
  • Stunted growth that can be attributed to poor root development and nutrient deprivation

Long-term effects of drought:

  • Thinner strands of turf that can lead to increased weed pressure
  • Root damage that can cause overall weakness in plants leaving them susceptible to diseases and pests
  • Increased irrigation demand to maintain optimal plant health

If the dry period lasts a year or longer, the cumulative effect of low rainfall on the landscape’s health will become more difficult to mitigate.

Though no one can control the weather, there is one thing that is within our control: preventive care.

SavATree can help properties become more resistant and tolerant to long periods of dryness using sustainable methods that don’t lead to overwatering.

Expert arborists can offer guidance on when and how to water various plants, mowing best-practices, core aeration benefits, grass seed recommendations, and wetting agents that improve water penetration, moisture retention and water use efficiency.
