Spring 2018: My Three Favorites

Garden Tool

Felco Hand Pruners

Though the design has been around for over 50 years, if it’s not broken, why fix it? I love my Felco Hand Pruners for cutting through smaller branches. They are lightweight, have a comfortable grip, are easily adjustable and are super strong – cutting through branches with ease. A must have is a nice leather carrying case you can attach to your belt. It provides safe storage while protecting the blade from moisture. The Felco is available at any garden supply center or home improvement store.

Flowering Plant

The Apple Tree

Cultivated since the ancient times, and native to Western Asia and Europe, the apple is my favorite. The subtle beauty of the flower and the sweet fragrance always reminds me of spring. To me, apple flowers also represent hope and promise for the future. Not only beautiful, they provide a simple food that can be stored, preserved and enjoyed for a long time after harvesting without much hassle. As a boy, I remember harvesting apples with my mother, then making applesauce – what an aroma!

Vegetable to Grow

Tomatoes

I grow several varieties each year – all with different purposes. Large slicing and cherry types to eat fresh in season, and plum/medium varieties to can whole or as sauce. I even turn the green tomatoes at the end of the season into chutney. There is no end to what you can do with tomatoes and the flavor right from your garden is better than anything you’ll find in the store. I grow my plants from seeds, but you can also find a wide variety of plants available when the planting season starts.
