Arborist Leads Children on Nature Walk at Quogue NY Wildlife Refuge

Quogue, NY —April 21, 2007—Arborist Josh Lehman led local children from the Hamptons on a tree-focused afternoon nature walk at the Quogue Wildlife Refuge on Saturday, April 21st. Lehman fielded questions from curious children about the variety of trees and other plant life as the group made their way past a pond, through one of the refuge’s wooded paths, and back to the start, all under the watchful eyes of an abundance of equally curious woodland creatures. Throughout the arborist-guided tour, Lehman also educated the children about the benefits of trees and how they symbiotically interact with the environment.

“We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day,” said Lehman. “The children were enthusiastic and very eager to learn. The questions seemed endless, but [they were] impressively inquisitive for children of such a young age. I think there were some future arborists in that group!”

In addition to the SavATree arborist, the event hosted a beekeeper and his honey-making bees, live animal presentations, and canoeing and kayaking on Old Ice Pond. Games, crafts and face-painting were provided for the children, and beautiful photographs depicting Mother Nature’s mysterious marvels were also on display courtesy of the Nature & Wildlife Photographers of Long Island (NWPLI).

Since 1934, the Quogue Wildlife Refuge has been a nature preserve and home to diverse wildlife including some that are permanently injured and require human care to survive. The refuge is a 305-acre expanse of protected land in Quogue NY, with over seven miles of trails with a variety of habitats including Pine Barrens, bogs, wetlands, and a tidal estuary. Visitors were welcome from all over the Hamptons including Quogue NY, Babylon NY, Brookhaven NY, East Hampton NY, Huntington NY, and Islip NY.
