Nutsedge, also known as nutgrass, is a perennial, grass-like weed that pursues the moist, poorly drained parts of your lawn and grows much faster in hot weather than the grass. Its leaves are grasslike and yellow-green, while the spiky head is purple or yellow. It’s a really tough weed to control because it grows from tiny tubers that form on roots that can grow 8-14 inches deep in the soil. Even if you pull out the roots and some tubers will stay behind to grow. Individual nutsedge plants may eventually form patches of 10 feet or more in diameter. Nutsedge has been a big problem this year. Can I get effective control at this time?
“Nutsedge has been a growing problem the last several years in areas where soil is installed or very wet conditions are prevalent. Also,many weak turf areas are easily invaded from dormant nutlets that emerge as new plants. Control with Sedgehammer or Tenacity is best done in June to insure some reduction of nutlets. Applications at this time of year will knock back existing plants but nutlets will likely re-emerge. Be sure to use a non-ionic surfactant or crop oil concentrate if not included in formulation.”
