SavATree Arborists & Historic Hudson Valley Develop Unique Partnership in Tarrytown NY

Tarrytown, NY —May 21, 2004— SavATree, a tree and shrub care company operating throughout the northeast, is helping to preserve the beauty and history of the properties under the care of Historic Hudson Valley (HHV).

Historic Hudson Valley is a non-profit educational organization based in Tarrytown, New York. Founded as Sleepy Hollow Restorations by John D. Rockefeller Jr. in 1951, the organization is dedicated to the preservation of historic landmarks, landscapes and the cultural heritage of the Hudson River Valley. HHV sites tell the story of America’s growth along the Hudson from the 17th to the 20th century.

Tom Marino, an International Society of Arboriculture certified arborist at SavATree, along with chief gardener for HHV, Mary Ann Witte, have to take special care of the trees at Washington Irving’s riverfront home, Sunnyside. Feature trees on HHV’s properties are scrutinized annually by Mary Ann and Tom for health and safety. “These particular trees have been around so long that they are part of our culture.” The favorite with visitors is a mighty sycamore that Mary Ann calls a “witness” tree, which means it was alive while Washington Irving himself lived at the site until he died in 1859.

Trees are an important part of the preservation of these sites. Day-to-day care is especially important for weak and older trees, including maintenance and restoration. Tom uses SavATree’s environmental approach, including careful monitoring and timely maintenance to preserve the health of trees and shrubs and ensure the safety of visitors on these historic properties. “We keep trees as clean as possible from opportunistic insects and diseases, feed plants on a rotating basis to help them overcome environmental stresses such as drought, and prune to maintain stability and reduce hazards,” says Tom. Recently, SavATree was able to prevent damage to several old “witness” hemlocks at Sunnyside by identifying and treating an infestation of Hemlock Woolly Adelgid,” states Mary Ann.

Tom says, “I feel that Mary Ann and I are in charge of their health, not only for people today, but so generations to come can continue to enjoy their majesty.”

Historic Hudson Valley is a network of six historic sites in the Hudson River Valley, including Washington Irving’s Sunnyside in Tarrytown; Kykuit, the Rockefeller Estate, a National Trust historic site; Philipsburg Manor in Sleepy Hollow; Van Cortlandt Manor in Croton-on-Hudson; Montgomery Place in Annandale-on-Hudson; and The Union Church of Pocantico Hills. School programs, special events and public tours are offered to approximately a quarter of a million people each year. Details about the organization and its public program are available on the Internet at www.hudsonvalley.org, or by phone at (914) 631-8200.
