Help Protect Your Home With Defensible Space

Extended drought, extreme heat, and powerful winds can create conditions that contribute to wildfire activity across California.

Creating and maintaining defensible space is one important step homeowners can take to help reduce wildfire exposure around their homes. Our licensed and insured team provides vegetation management, brush clearing, tree care, and fuel reduction services that can help support defensible space efforts.

In California, defensible space requirements apply to many homes in wildfire-prone areas. Under Public Resources Code §4291, people who own, lease, control, operate, or maintain a building or structure in a State Responsibility Area must maintain up to 100 feet of defensible space around the structure, but not beyond the property line. Government Code §51182 applies similar requirements to occupied dwellings and structures in Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones designated by local agencies.

California’s defensible space framework includes three zones: Zone 0, 0 to 5 feet from the structure; Zone 1, 5 to 30 feet; and Zone 2, 30 to 100 feet or to the property line, whichever is closer. Zone 0 is intended to be an ember-resistant area closest to the home. Zone 0 regulations are still subject to state rulemaking and implementation guidance, so homeowners should confirm current requirements with CAL FIRE or their local fire authority.

Homeowners can check whether their home is located in a designated fire hazard severity zone using CAL FIRE’s fire hazard severity zone resources and should consult local officials for requirements that apply to their property.

Important Note for California Homeowners

SavATree does not perform official wildfire risk assessments, defensible space inspections, or compliance determinations. CAL FIRE and local fire agencies are responsible for inspections and enforcement.

If you have received an inspection report, notice to comply, or other guidance from CAL FIRE or your local fire authority, our team can help complete vegetation management work that may address those recommendations. We provide services such as brush clearing, fuel reduction, tree pruning, tree removal, and vegetation management.

For official inspections, compliance determinations, or questions regarding PRC §4291, AB 38 disclosures, or local ordinances, please contact CAL FIRE or your local fire authority.

FAQs

  • Defensible space is the area around a home where vegetation and combustible materials are managed to help reduce the potential for fire to spread to structures. Proper vegetation management can help slow fire movement and provide firefighters with safer access.

  • California law generally requires up to 100 feet of defensible space for covered structures in State Responsibility Areas and certain Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones, but not beyond the property line. Local requirements may vary. Consult your local fire authority for guidance specific to your home.

  • Common services include brush clearing, vegetation management, selective tree pruning, hazardous tree removal, fuel reduction, and understory thinning.

  • Not necessarily. Many homeowners maintain defensible space proactively. If CAL FIRE or your local fire authority has provided an inspection report or notice, we can review the recommended vegetation management work and discuss service options. Official inspections and compliance determinations are conducted by CAL FIRE and local fire agencies.

  • Spring and early summer are often good times to complete vegetation management before peak wildfire conditions. However, defensible space is an ongoing responsibility, and improvements can be made throughout the year as conditions change.
