Your Guide to Citrus Trees: Expert Care from Roots to Canopy

Whether you're nurturing a lemon tree on your patio or tending a full orange grove, proper care is what keeps a citrus tree looking good and producing healthy fruit.

What makes citrus trees special?

Citrus trees keep their glossy green leaves year-round, adding color to your landscape even in winter, and produce fruit you can eat straight from the branch to enjoy the tang of a lemon, the sweetness of an orange, or a lime for your drinks. Fragrant white blossoms make a citrus tree a food source and a focal point in a yard. With consistent care, it can keep producing fruit and foliage for many years.

How your citrus tree shapes your landscape

Most citrus trees grow 10 to 30 feet tall, depending on the variety and whether it's a dwarf or standard type, with a canopy spread of roughly 10 to 25 feet at maturity. The evergreen foliage, blossoms, and fruit give it visual interest in every season. Planted in a row, citrus trees can form a privacy screen. A single tree can anchor a landscape design, and a mature tree provides shade in summer. The flowers and fruit also draw pollinators and birds, providing food for native species.

Key characteristics of a citrus tree

Fruit is the easiest way to identify a citrus tree, but outside of harvest season, a few other traits help. Leaves are oval-shaped, dark green, and glossy, and stay on the tree year-round. Bark is smooth and grayish. Blossoms are small, white, and strongly scented. Fruit size ranges from small limes to large grapefruits, and the most common citrus trees grown in the U.S. are orange, lemon, lime, grapefruit, tangerine, and mandarin.

Ideal growing conditions

Citrus trees generally do best in USDA hardiness zones 9 through 11, though cold-hardy varieties like kumquats and some mandarins can survive in zone 8 with winter protection. Soil should be well-draining and slightly acidic; a soil test will tell you if amendments are needed. Citrus trees need full sun, at least six to eight hours of direct light a day, and soil that's kept moist without becoming waterlogged.

Caring for your citrus tree

Watering

Water newly planted trees deeply, two to three times a week for the first few weeks, then taper off as the tree establishes roots. Once established, water deeply but less often, typically once a week, or whenever the top two to three inches of soil feel dry. Container citrus is the exception and may need water daily in hot weather. Avoid saturated soil, since standing water leads to root rot.

Pruning

Pruning keeps a citrus tree healthy, well-shaped, and productive. Prune in late winter or early spring, before new growth starts. Remove dead, diseased, or crossing branches, thin the center of the tree for better air circulation, and trim branches that hang too close to the ground. Mulching

Mulch conserves soil moisture, moderates soil temperature, adds nutrients as it breaks down, and keeps weeds down. Apply a two- to three-inch layer of organic mulch around the base of the tree, keeping it at least six inches from the trunk to avoid trapping moisture against the bark. Refresh once a year or as needed.

Avoid volcano mulching, where mulch is piled high against the trunk. This traps moisture against the bark and can cause rot. Spread mulch out flat instead, covering more ground around the tree rather than piling it up.

Protecting your citrus tree

Citrus trees are generally hardy, but a few diseases and insects can cause problems.

Diseases we treat

Citrus greening is a bacterial disease spread by the Asian citrus psyllid, a small insect. It causes blotchy leaves and fruit that's lopsided, bitter, and green at the bottom even when ripe. There's no cure, but nutrient management and insect control can slow its progression.

Citrus canker is a bacterial disease that causes raised, brown lesions with yellow halos on leaves, stems, and fruit. It's also incurable, and an infected tree usually needs to be removed.

Root rot is typically caused by fungi in poorly drained soil. It shows up as yellowing leaves, branch dieback, and eventually tree death. Improving drainage and applying fungicides can manage it.

Insects we manage

Citrus leafminers are small moths whose larvae tunnel through leaves, leaving silvery trails and distorted new growth. Targeted insecticides and natural predators help control them.

Scale insects are small, immobile pests that feed on sap. Signs include small bumps on branches and leaves, yellowing leaves, declining branches, and sooty mold or honeydew. 

Asian citrus psyllids are tiny insects that spread citrus greening. Look for distorted new growth and small, brown, winged insects on the tree. 

Other challenges

Some fruit drop is normal and can't be fully avoided, but excessive fruit drop can often be reduced with proper watering, fertilization, and insect control.

Signs your citrus tree needs expert attention

Watch for yellowing leaves with green veins, which can point to a nutrient deficiency; sudden leaf drop outside of a normal seasonal pattern; sticky residue or black sooty mold on leaves, a sign of insects; and distorted or stunted new growth. Citrus tree care in different climates

In warm climates, zones 9 through 11, citrus trees do well planted directly in the ground, where long growing seasons and mild winters support steady growth. With enough sun and consistent irrigation, regular pruning and insect control keep them healthy.

In cooler climates, zones 4 through 7, growing citrus in the ground is harder, but containers work well. Potted trees can spend warm months outdoors and move inside once temperatures drop.

Popular citrus varieties and their care

Lemon trees, including Meyer, Eureka, and Lisbon, are more cold-sensitive than other citrus and need frost protection. Prune to limit size and remove crossing branches. In good conditions, they can produce fruit year-round.

Orange trees, including Navel, Valencia, and Blood Orange, need consistent watering to produce sweet fruit. Pruning needs are minimal, mostly removing water sprouts and maintaining shape. Harvest usually comes in winter or spring, depending on variety.

Lime trees, including Key lime and Persian lime, are very frost-sensitive and need protection in cooler climates. Keep them compact to encourage dense growth. In warm climates, they can produce fruit year-round.

Grapefruit trees, including Ruby Red, Rio Red, and Star Ruby, need more space than other citrus, so avoid crowding them. Pruning should be minimal and focused on keeping the center open for airflow. Harvest is typically winter or early spring.

Mandarin trees, including Clementine, Satsuma, and Tangerine, are more cold-hardy than other citrus, making them a good option for cooler climates. Keep the tree open to prevent fungal disease. Harvest is usually in winter.

Harvesting and enjoying your citrus fruit

To harvest, use clean, sharp pruning shears or scissors and cut the fruit close to the stem, leaving a small piece attached. Handle it gently to avoid bruising. Most citrus keeps at room temperature for about a week, or up to a month in the refrigerator.

From there, eat it fresh, juice it, zest the peel for added flavor in other dishes, or preserve it by canning, drying, or freezing for later.

  • Water established citrus trees deeply about once a week, or whenever the top 2 to 3 inches of soil feel dry. Newly planted trees need water two to three times a week until their roots establish. Container citrus dries out faster and may need daily watering in hot weather. Avoid waterlogged soil, which can lead to root rot.

  • Spring is the best time to plant a citrus tree, after the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed. This gives the roots a full growing season to establish before winter. In frost-free climates, fall planting also works well, since cooler temperatures reduce transplant stress on the young tree.

     

  • Yellowing citrus leaves usually point to a nutrient deficiency, overwatering, or root rot from poorly drained soil.   • The best fertilizer for citrus trees is one formulated for citrus, with nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and micronutrients like iron, zinc, and manganese.
