Sudden Oak Death is a west coast plant disease. It is often found in oaks, tanoaks and in the bay area’s Bay Laurel plants. but can also spread to over 100 plant species and other tree varieties

What causes Sudden Oak Death?

Sudden Oak Death is caused by a microscopic organism called Phytophthora ramorum. This organism is similar to fungi, and it spreads through rain splash, wind-blown rain, contaminated tools, soil, and infected nursery plants. 

The disease is most prevalent in the moist coastal forests of California and Oregon, though isolated cases in nursery stock have been reported in other states under quarantine and containment protocols. 

What are signs of Sudden Oak Death?

Because this disease spreads quickly and without showing obvious symptoms, knowing what to look for can help you act before the damage becomes irreversible.

  • Dark, reddish sap oozing from the trunk (referred to as “bleeding cankers” in the arborist community) 
  • Leaf wilting or browning, especially at branch tips 
  • Rapid canopy thinning and branch dieback

  • Sudden decline and death, especially in tanoaks

Sudden Oak Death lifecycle

Sudden Oak Death is a fast-moving disease that follows a season cycle. Knowing when it’s most active helps us target treatments effectively, as preventive care or early disease intervention are essential.

Here's how the infection typically unfolds:
 

  1. Wet Seasons (Spring/Fall): Spore production increases. Spores spread via rain and wind to leaves, bark, or soil. 
  2. Infection: Spores land on host plants and infect through wounds or natural openings, often entering through leaves, shoots, or wounded tissue. 
  3. Symptom Development: Infection may take weeks or months to become visible, eventually leading to cankers, leaf spots, and dieback. 
  4. Tree Decline: As cankers expand, water and nutrient flow are disrupted, leading to rapid health decline and death. 
  5. Important: If Sudden Oak Death is impacting a tree on your property and you have others of the seem species nearby, it is essential to treat those trees as well, even if they are asymptomatic. Without treatment, even these asymptomatic trees are at risk.
