As you start to prepare for spring planting, it’s important to use proper tree planting techniques. A common tree planting myth is that it’s not possible to plant too deep, when in fact planting too deep may be very harmful.
Planting bushes or trees too deep can hinder proper hydration, causing the plant to suffocate and die. When planting a tree, dig a hole at least two times the width of the root ball and the exact height of the root ball. This will ensure that no part of the trunk sits lower than ground level.
Once you can tell that the tree trunk is straight, fill the hole back up with the soil that you originally dug out, making sure that there are no air pockets. Be sure to water consistently as the tree is growing. Add mulch to insulate the soil and help maintain proper moisture.
