Observations in the Field:
The Despairs of an Arborvitae Hedge
November 7, 2019 – I had to detect why this one, very long established arborvitae was in decline. After digging at the base for a few minutes I found the culprit. Someone had the idea to put down thick, heavy duty garbage bags around the root system, all the way up to the trunk of this arborvitae, probably thinking it would be a great weed barrier. Well, thank goodness they got tired after doing the first one because it was essentially a barrier to all things for this one arborvitae. It wasn’t getting water, oxygen or nutrients. Caring for your property isn’t always a DIY project. For professional tree care advice, contact your local SavATree arborist!
November 6, 2019 – When I saw this rhododendron on a property today, I was blown away by its health and size! It was at least 6 feet tall. I’ve only seen them this big out near the east coast or the forests of Virginia.
Japanese Maple Tree Scale
November 6, 2019 – Japanese maple scale is typically found in more southern states, which tells me this tree came in from an out of state nursery (a no-no for optimal health). This scale typically infests the trunk and branches of trees, but have been observed on leaves in heavy infestations. Heavily infested trees will exhibit twig and branch dieback, thinning canopy, and a gradual decline in health. The bark of heavily infested trees will have a bumpy white texture due to scale insect covers. Insecticide applications should coincide with crawler emergence for best control with horticultural oils in fall/spring or insecticide in summer months. Contact your SavATree arborist for the most professional advice on your property!
Pretty Pink Trees in the Woods
November 6, 2019 – I couldn’t guess what these trees were in the woods at first. They had the most peculiar pink leaf I’d ever seen. They were pruned by somebody who really knew what they were doing. On closer look it turned out they were euonymus shrubs that were the size of trees! These pictures do not do these beauties justice! The reason they are pink rather than fire engine red is because they aren’t getting enough sunlight in the woods, but I think they’re rather beautiful.
Brilliant Red Sunset Maple
October 18, 2019 – Glossy green leaves persist on the tree turning orange-red to brilliant red in the fall. Red Sunset grows moderately fast, 45′-50′ high with a 35′-40′ spread. It adapts to a wide range of climates and soils, but requires acid soil and is salt-sensitive. For professional and knowledgeable advice on your trees, contact your local SavATree arborist!
October 1, 2019 – Removing large trees is always very exciting. Although it can be hard to remove trees that have been on your property for decades, or sometimes even centuries, sometimes it is necessary as the threat of tree damage on your property or to your home continues to grow as the tree weakens. Keep your family and home safe. Contact SavATree today for a free health check on your trees!
September 16, 2019 – My sister, Brooke, is one of our new spring hires! She is currently learning chainsaw safety. The safety of our employees and clients is SavATree’s top priority and we continuously train our team members to exceed all industry safety standards. For the most professional tree care, contact SavATree!
Living Root Bridges
September 16, 2019 – There is a tribe in India that has learned how to train the roots of large trees to create natural suspension bridges that can span over 100 feet and last 500 – 600 years. Living root bridges are a form of tree shaping common in the southern part of the Northeast Indian state of Meghalaya. They are handmade from the aerial roots of rubber fig trees (Ficus elastica) by the Khasi and Jaintia peoples of the mountainous terrain along the southern part of the Shillong Plateau. Root bridges have also been observed in the Indian state of Nagaland. Living root bridges have also been created in Indonesia at Jembatan Akar on the island of Sumatra and in the Banten province of Java, made by the Baduy people.
September 11, 2019 – This red maple on one of my client’s properties in Troy, MI had extremely fibrous roots. Several of the girdling roots were removed in hopes of restoring the tree. Storm Protection for Trees
July 22, 2019 – Scientists thought they had created the perfect tree, but it became a nightmare. The ornamental pear tree species is notorious for its poor branch structure, cross-pollination problems and a stinky smell. The stormy season is here and this tree on one of my client’s properties was damaged in a storm. Protect your pear trees and other ornamentals from splitting like this. Contact your local SavATree Arborist and we can help!
Protect Your American Elm Now!
Don’t wait to protect your gorgeous Elm. Signs which indicate an elm has Dutch elm disease include leaves yellowing or withering before the fall season and dark discoloration on the branches and stems.
