BGC’s Tree Symposium Responds To Superstorm Sandy

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — BEDFORD HILLS, NY–January 9, 2013 – Michael Galvin, Director of the SavATree Consulting Group, will serve as a speaker and panelist during “Trees: A Symposium” presented by Branch Out!, a tree planting program initiated and funded by the Bedford Garden Club. The event – focused on the community’s response to trees damaged and lost as a result of Superstorm Sandy – will take place at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 17, at Historical Hall in Bedford Village. Symposium tickets cost $5 each and are available at the door.

Launched in 2010 by the Bedford Garden Club, Branch Out! was created to preserve the community’s historic rural character by advocating for the replacement of trees lost due to storms, old age, salt run-off, and removal. Now – nearly two months following Superstorm Sandy – felled trees lining Bedford’s streets serve as a record of the storm’s impact. Branch Out! will use this symposium to initiate a dialogue aimed at restoring the community’s tree canopy and preparing for the next storm.

The Bedford Garden Club Tree Symposium will feature three local tree experts: Rod Christie (Executive Director, Mianus River Gorge Preserve), Michael Galvin (Director, SavATree Consulting Group) and David Fedczuk (Arborist, New York Botanical Garden). Each expert will offer a brief presentation about tree maintenance and storm preparation before participating in a moderated panel discussion.

During his presentation, Michael Galvin will focus on the two primary factors that cause trees to fall in storms: structural failure and soil failure. Armed with this information, Galvin will explore how an arborist can assess a tree’s risk for storm-induced failure by considering the tree’s shape, location and appearance.
