If you're a nature or tree lover with a smartphone or tablet device, there is a world of apps out there waiting to be discovered. Here are a few of our favorites:
leafsnap is an electronic field guide for your smartphone or tablet that uses visual recognition software to help identify tree species. As the name would imply, just snap a picture of a leaf and the app scans it's database and returns high resolution images of the associated leaves, flowers, fruit, petiole, seeds, and bark. Currently, leafsnap includes only trees of the Northeast but is growing and will soon feature trees from the entire continental United States.
Use your phone or tablet (and your imagination) to create incredible, fractalstyle trees with geom-E-Tree. Simple gestures allow you to quickly and smoothly manipulate the branches of your tree, changing size, angle and number of branch nodes. There are also a number of color options that give you the freedom to build anything from simple, sparse trees to a lush, colorful kaleidoscope-style creation.
The name says it all with this clean, simple app. Each time you open Green Tips!, you'll see an interesting new idea to help you cut down on waste, save resources, recycle creatively and help the environment. once you've seen a new tip, it's stored in an "All Tips Seen" list so you can quickly reference it at any time in the future. green Tips! also gives you the ability to make a few quick taps and share tips with friends by email or Facebook.
