Insect Control and Mite Treatment On Trees & Shrubs

Insect control on your property for plant health consists of a management program that includes a thorough inspection of your landscape by a professionally trained arborist, expert diagnosis and treatment, as well as careful monitoring. Insects and mites usually attack trees and shrubs that are in poor health and/or under stress. Therefore, your arborist's first priority is to restore the health of your trees and shrubs so that they can naturally resist insect and mite infestation. Our insect control philosophy is to use low impact methods and ingredients to minimize populations of insects and mites while maintaining environmental sensibility.

The presence of some insects and mites can be harmless, but certain species may be detrimental and even cause trees and shrubs to die. Asian long-horned beetle, winter moth, inch worm, aphids, gypsy moth, canker worm, hemlock woolly adelgid and borers are some of the most common and harmful insects. Control of these species in the least intrusive manner is made possible by SavATree’s technologically advanced scheduling system. It enables us to achieve insect control by treating each species on your property at the most advantageous time to ensure efficacy and environmental integrity.

Deer Tick Control

Deer tick control is important for protecting your family and pets from exposure to Lyme disease infected ticks. This treatment is applied to the ecotone areas and sometimes to the lawn areas of your landscape to provide an immediate reduction in the number of ticks on your property. The ecotone is the boundary zone between lawn areas and wooded areas and is the preferred habitat of the deer tick. Control of tick population in this area of your yard is vital because according to published research, approximately 90% of deer ticks on a property will be found in the ecotone areas. We advocate deer tick control treatments at the end of May/early June and again in September as a minimum, and monthly treatments during the following season as the maximum.

Common Insect Control Problems

The most common insect infestations include hemlock woolly adelgid, aphids, winter moth, canker worm, gypsy moth, inch worm, and borers of many varieties.

Hemlock woolly adelgid is one of the most damaging insects at work in the northeast. This insect has two generations per year and is most active during cool weather. Hemlock woolly adelgid spread by wind and birds, and they are capable of killing mature stands of Hemlock within two growing seasons.

Aphids attack a wide range of plant species by removing the sap from leaves and stems. Insect control will help minimize feeding that may cause distortion of the foliage on your trees, chlorosis (yellowing) of leaves, and may promote the growth of sooty mold on the foliage, leading to the eventual decline of your specimens.

Borers such as lilac, dogwood, shot hole, rhododendron, bronze birch and elm bark beetle are damaging insects. Without plant health care and/or insect control services, they can cause extensive damage by feeding in the conductive tissues of the trunk and larger branches. This feeding damage cuts off the supply of nutrients and water to the canopy usually resulting in death of the tree.
