Arbor Fun! Tree-Friendly Education and Goodies Combined to Delight Russel C. Struble Kindergartners

Bensalem, PA —April 27, 2007—Certified arborist Robert Logan visited the kindergarten class of the Russell C. Struble Elementary School in Bensalem PA today, with his wife Michelle’s special homemade tree cookies in tow. Robert visited the school in celebration of Arbor Day to inform the children of the importance of trees and their value in our ecosystem.

An outdoor classroom was established in a small picnic grove outside the school house. In addition to the cookies, Robert shared facts and stories about trees with the children. “I explained to them how one forest produces two-thirds of the Earth’s oxygen and other interesting facts, like the tallest tree is a California Red Wood. It stands over 350 feet tall.”

The class, comprised of 80 Bensalem PA kindergartners, discussed trees in a question and answer format, learned about how Arbor Day came to be, and discovered the important role trees play in the Bensalem community as well as surrounding neighborhoods such as Trevose, Oakford, Cornwells Heights, Eddington, and Andalusia. Each child also received a goody bag containing a Junior Arborist activity book, crayons, pencils, erasers, and a Colorado Blue Spruce seedling to take home.

“The children were taught how to plant the sapling and how to properly care for it.” Logan added, “We discussed conifers for a little while, and it was amazing to see that some of the children knew exactly what this word meant.” Robert also brought a variety of hands on “touchy feely things”, like sweet gum seeds, so each child could see, touch, and smell specific examples found in nature in the Bucks County PA area, including Trevose PA, Oakford PA, Cornwells Heights PA, Eddington PA and Andalusia PA.

Linda Tus, the Russell C. Struble Elementary School kindergarten teacher was delighted by Robert’s activities. “It was imperative and vital for the children to physically see someone who works with trees for a living. Our science curriculum for the year is solely based on our ecosystem with an emphasis on trees, so combining our year long science expedition with tangible experience is impeccable. Furthermore, the children loved the presentation.”

The Russell C. Struble Elementary School is located at 4300 Bensalem Boulevard in Bensalem, PA 19020. For more information about the school visit www.bensalemsd.org or phone (215) 750-2800.
