Observations in the Field:

Giant Ichneumon Wasp – Manchester by the sea, MA

August 12, 2021 – Stumbled across this beautiful (but large and unsettling) female wasp this afternoon. Upon onspection of the declining tree I notice the wasp ovipositing eggs. The tree had many other stress factors but definitely a contributing factor was the Horntail wasp larvae that this Ichneumon wasp was trying to find!

Shoot Dieback on Evergreen Tree’s – Beverly, MA

August 5, 2021 – I have been seeing this type of dieback a lot in the past few years as clients become worried their young tree’s are dying come Spring. Classic example of White Pine Weevil or Engelmann Spruce Weevil, this species can affect a variety of young evergeens but their damage is limited to the tip of the main shoot and the tree is otherwise healthy.

Girdling Root in South Hamilton, MA

August 5, 2021 – In reviewing a new lawn clients property I noticed a declining tree along the driveway, upon further inspection there was a very large girdling root and the tree will have to come down, but we are excavating the roots of the other Maples in the row.
