September 1, 2019 – Borers are a type of insect that aggressively tunnel through the wood of trees. They can affect many different species of trees and can severely harm or kill the host. This tree is covered in borer frass, which are the sawdust-like excrements left as they bore through the wood. At the first sign of borer infestation, trees must be treated immediately or this tiny insect can have a large and devastating impact. For more information on borers and protecting your trees, contact your SavATree arborist today!
August 28, 2019 – A sudden change in topography, hydrodynamics and soil compaction ended this mature white oak’s life in one season. This tree was over 150 years old and needed to be taken down. This is why it is so important to hire a certified arborist to regularly take care of your trees. Contact SavATree for all of your property care needs!
August 14, 2019 – Girdling roots are a very common, potentially deadly condition for your trees. Frequently cause by improper planting or transplanting, girdling roots choke the the tree, restricting the flow of water and nutrients. As you can see from this photo, the tree in question is severely thinning out near the top branches. If you notice a problem like this with one or more of your trees, reach out to us immediately and we may be able to turn the health of your tree around!
August 8, 2019 – Many clients ask whether or not lichens can harm their tree. The answer is NO! Lichens are created by the symbiotic relationship between fungus and algae. The fungus grows on the tree and collect moisture, which is needed by the algae. The algae returns the favor by using the energy from the sun to create food for the fungus. The lichen itself does not cause harm to the tree, but some consider it very unsightly. If you are not happy with the way your tree looks, contact your local SavATree certified arborist. We will help you to understand the safest, healthiest ways to make your trees look how you want them to look!
July 25, 2019 – This client’s tree was damaged by a contractor they hired. He began to cut the base of this beautiful Kousa dogwood tree with a chainsaw before changing his mind halfway through. Hire a team of licensed professionals. Contact SavATree today for all of your tree, shrub and lawn care needs.
July 16, 2019 – At SavATree, it’s not only important for us to look out for our clients, it is also essential that we keep our employees safe. As an arborist, before beginning any tree work, we must fully assess the conditions and hazards associated with the job. I found this large wasp nest in one of my client’s trees before performing a general tree care job and was able to alert my crew to keep them safe!
This crack appeared suddenly on his leaning Red Oak in Herndon, VA. This is a hazard and the tree needs to be removed immediately to prevent damage to your home, property or family. Keep an eye out for issues like this with your trees. When they do occur, don’t hesitate to contact SavATree.

To properly protect your trees in the event of construction and other work, contact SavATree and a certified arborist can help you take preventative measures to save your tree before it gets to this point.
June 17, 2019 – Take a look at these distorted leaves. This morphing is caused by aphids, a small sap-sucking insect that feeds on a wide variety of plants and trees. June 17, 2019 – I spotted these tiny pests on an Emerald Green Arborvitae in Herndon, Virginia, slowly browning out the green growth. Spider mites can be very difficult to detect thanks to their minuscule size. They feed on plants, causing them to yellow or brown. Severe infestations can lead to significant damage or death for the plant. Contact your local SavATree arborist to have your shrubs and trees inspected for pests like this regularly!

May 22, 2019 – The tiny white bugs pictured above can be much more destructive than you may think. These are aphids and, in this photo, they are feeding on a tulip poplar leaf. This is a major cause of aggravation with our clients right now. Aphids can yellow leaves in small groups and, in larger groups, can turn them completely brown and cause them to fall off the tree. Don’t let this happen to your treasured trees. Contact your local SavATree arborist and we can help detect the problem before it’s too late!
