How to Prepare Trees for Hurricane Season

For Immediate Release – August 19, 2008

Bedford Hills, NY—Experts are predicting that the 2008 hurricane season will be twenty five percent worse than average seasons according to a study conducted by the Casualty & Property Insurance Underwriters non-profit research group. With the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina approaching, and the National Hurricane Center issuing advisories on hurricanes, it’s important to take the necessary precautions now to ensure that your trees survive the next storm.

“Part of having a disaster safety plan for your property includes taking actions to make sure that your trees are safe and not at risk for serious damage,” says Dane Buell, certified arborist for SavATree. “By knowing your level of vulnerability to storm damage and which preventative actions to take, you can reduce the effects of a hurricane disaster to your home and yard.”

According to Steve Nix of the Society of American Foresters, estimates of property value loss from tree storm damage can approach more than one billion dollars annually depending on the severity of the weather. Hurricane hazards come in many forms and include storm surge, high winds, tornadoes, and flooding. Most trees that fall or are damaged during a storm could have been identified as hazardous or at risk if they had been properly evaluated beforehand.

A certified arborist can conduct a storm risk audit of your trees in order to prevent damage. SavATree has developed a 14-point analysis program to assess tree health that includes research and scientific data, visual inspection and diagnostic testing for problems that are not always visual. Proactive tree care before a storm helps prevent future problems and the loss of precious landscape treasures.
