NJ Tree Expert Teams with NJ Youth Corps to Train Future Arborists

Maplewood, NJ —May 18, 2007—International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certified Arborist Scott Lamm teamed up with the New Jersey Youth Corps’ Northern Urban Community Forestry Academy for a four day tree care expert training session at the Community Recreation Center in Maplewood NJ from May 15th through May 18th. Scott Lamm, assisted by expert tree climbers Alex Mendez and Jamie Chamber, created a realistic tree care and climbing training scenario for the underprivileged youths to experience. SavATree and arborist Scott Lamm have made a commitment to the New Jersey Youth Corps to volunteer services annually. “They were a great group of kids,” Scott continued, “It is very gratifying to help inner-city children and perhaps SavATree can even recruit some of these future arborists.”

The New Jersey Department of Agriculture funds the Youth Corps’ forestry division and in this particular event supplied the main components including climbing equipment, bucket trucks, ropes, seeding instruments and safety gear. The combined efforts of tree experts Scott, Alex and Jamie enabled the NJ Youth Corps to utilize different seeding devices, become skilled at tying proper rope climbing knots, acclimate themselves with the saddle and use a throw ball which is used to ‘loop’ the rope around a structurally sound tree limb to act as an anchor. Scott continued, “The group was just so into it and especially on point. It was an awesome experience. Some of the participants were originally nervous to get into the gear. Alex, Jamie and I all ensured the safety of everyone and watching people overcome their fear of heights was rewarding. And of course there were some who were fearless and pulled themselves right up too!”

Students participating in SavATree’s demonstration received indispensable credits towards their degree from the New Jersey Youth Corps’ Urban Community Forestry Academy, a division of the Youth Corps which enables youths with interest in Arboriculture to receive an educational foundation in the classroom and hands on experience in the field.
