Looking Back & Moving Forward

It has been said that fusion is the theme for the new millennium as people, styles and cultures increasingly mix together creating a smaller and more interdependent world.

-Daniel van Starrenburg, President and CEO

FUSION ON OUR PROPERTIES
In our landscapes this has been going on for centuries. Early botanists and plant collectors have brought us new species of plants from all over the world. Many of our ornamental plants originate from far away places like China and Japan. Plant geneticists and breeders have developed other new and exciting hybrid varieties and cultivars with increasingly more spectacular displays of color or intentional subtlety.

The debate of native versus imported has long been blurred because so few can truly be called “native”, and contrary to popular belief, native does not mean more resistant to deadly pathogens. Think of American Elm, American Ash, American Red Pine, and American Chestnut, etc.- all at risk or almost extinct. So welcome new and resistant species to beautify our urban and suburban landscapes. Some of the new “tough” species of street trees include the Zelkova and Japanese Pagoda tree, both from Japan.

FUSION ON OUR PROPERTIES
Our company has attracted people from all over the world and we sometimes refer to ourselves as the United Nations of tree, shrub and lawn care. There are many people that are passionate about plants, but (too) few who are willing to dedicate their life to their care. So in our search for experts filled with passion for the natural world, we have gone beyond the borders of the towns, villages and states that we serve.

We now include British, Canadians, Chileans, Dominican, Dutch, El Salvadorians, Guatemalan, Mexican and New Zealanders among our still predominantly American population.

It amazes me that entire families will uproot and transplant themselves to a new state, country or continent and participate in our mission to “improve the quality of life in our communities by enhancing the environment while enjoying our careers and taking pride in what we do”. While this amazes me, it also reminds me of the responsibility that we collectively have to ensure that they succeed.
