Arborists Teach Langley School Students to “Think Green”

McClean, Virginia – May 2, 2007 – Cynthia Tweedy and Randy Ziemienski of SavATree, taught students to “think green” at an Arbor Day seminar for the students at The Langley School in McClean VA on April 19 at 11 A.M. The two arborists teamed up in an educational question and answer forum on the significance of Arbor Day and the value of trees. For example, “Trees are the longest living organisms on the planet and one of the earth’s greatest natural resources. They keep our air supply clean, reduce noise pollution, improve water quality, prevent erosion, provide food and building materials, and make our landscapes look beautiful,” says Cynthia Tweedy, Consulting Arborist.

Cynthia started off with a powerful interactive slideshow featuring the important roles trees play in the McClean VA community and interesting tree facts. According to Cynthia, “A single tree produces approximately 260 pounds of oxygen per year. That means two mature trees can supply enough oxygen annually to support a family of four.”

International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certified Arborist Randy Ziemienski demonstrated how to properly use climbing gear. “This procedure enables specialists to get right up to the tree’s canopy and prune trees from angles and heights normally unapproachable from a bucket truck,” explains Randy. He added, “Pruning increases the tree’s strength, stature and seasonal character.”

“We had a great day at The Langley School,” said Cynthia, “The kids were amazing…they were really into it!” Randy added, “The kids just soaked up all the information we had to offer. The principal is even thinking about quizzing the children about what they learned.”

“This event is one of many that our arborists in Virginia conducted this Arbor Day,” says SavATree President Daniel van Starrenburg, “SavATree is passionate about educating the local community on the importance of trees and the value of plant health care. We need to help educate our youth so they can continue to preserve this beautiful Earth.”
