New York, NY April 23, 2007SavATree’s Elliot Kraus, John Morris and Tara Connery returned to the Chapin School, a private all girls school in Manhattan’s Upper East Side, to address second graders about the honey locust that was planted a year ago on the premises. SavATree had donated the small tree to the school last spring along with a promise to return to the school to educate students about proper care of trees.
The Chapin School’s second grade class was divided into two 25 children groups and took turns between a classroom presentation and an interactive fertilization demonstration. Elliot Kraus and Tara Connery addressed the value of proper tree care in the classroom session including the importance of pruning, disease diagnosis and insect control. John Morris took the remaining students to the side of the building where the honey locust was planted to explain how tree fertilizer works. John diligently spoke about the importance of food for trees, like water, micronutrients and organic fertilizers. The girls received hands on experience properly feeding the tree including mixing the fertilizer with water in the correct ratio and then applying the mixture to the soil.
Elliot and Tara handed out goody bags for each child in the classroom that included a Junior Arborist activity book, crayons, colorful bug erasers, pencils, and Colorado Blue Spruce saplings for each student to take home and plant. Elliot briefly explained tree health fundamentals and tree safety concerns including being mindful of potentially hazardous branches and then opened the floor to a question and answer session. Elliot said, “I received lots of simple but great questions about the environment. They didn’t beat me up too bad!” One student asked, “What color flowers does the tree make?”
The combination of the question and answer session and hands on demonstration left the girls with a better understanding of tree care. “Overall, the day was great,” said John Morris, “The girls learned and retained a tremendous amount of really valuable information.”
The Chapin School is a private all girls school in Manhattan, New York, and open to grades K 12.
